RESEARCH
1970-73 Extensive research at the London School of Economics, Geography Graduate Department in behavioural and social geography. This led to a number of publications. I published a critique and an acclaimed social geography text.
From 1988 to the present I have been researching a number of areas connected to disability and education -
  1. The position of disabled teachers, leading to an NUT pamphlet and DfE circular 13/93 and continuing work with NUT and GTC. Survey conducted September 2008.
  2. Curriculum and Disability leading to an ILEA Report and Book Disability Equality in the Classroom :A Human Rights Perspective (ILEA/DEE 1990/1992) and continuing work in a whole variety of schools. MPhil in this area and completed the qualifying three years registration and a number of pamphlets and the pack All Equal All Different (DEE 2004) published as part of the European Year of Disability. In 2009/10 carrying out action research project for QCDA into ways of promoting disability equality in the National Curriculum working with 20 schools to develop taught good practice examples to provide written and filmed exemplar case studies for QCDA website.
  3. Action research on Whole School Policies, Equal Opportunities and Inclusive Education visiting a number of schools and reflecting on findings to produce three papers and Altogether Better Comic Relief 1994.
  4. The history of images of disablement and how these effect arts, literature, the media and how the curriculum. Invisible Children (Save the Children 1994) This has been reflected in a number of TV programmes and reports I have worked upon, and the project and book Disabling Imagery developed and published with the British Film Institute (2004)
  5. Implementing Disability Equality in schools in UK leading to DFES Implementing the Disability Discrimination Act in Schools and Early Years(2006), the book Making it Happen Council for Disabled Children (2002).
  6. Developing Inclusive Education around the world. I have been involved with Action Research and Training in the following countries - the United Nations (New York), Egypt and Morocco (1999), India (2003, 2004, 2005), Argentina (2005), Mauritius (2006), Southern Africa (2007), Uganda (2007), South Africa (2008), Russia 2008, Ethiopia(2008). This has led to Implementing Inclusive Education: A Commonwealth Perspective (2008) published by Commonwealth Secretariat.
  7. The Duty to Promote Disability Equality in Schools. Produced a primary and secondary course book . Carried out a contract for DCSF in July 2008 to inform the Secretary of States Report on the Disability Duty 2008. This involved 11 focus groups of 160 disabled young people across England, Developed a tool to evaluate DES and analysed 50 primary and 25 secondary disability equality schemes. http://www.worldofinclusion.com/res/impact/dpdes.doc
